How UK bathing-water quality classifications work
What classifications such as Excellent, Good, Sufficient and Poor tell you—and what they do not.

A classification is not a live reading
Annual classifications summarise monitored bathing-water performance. They are useful context, but they do not describe the water at a precise moment on the day of your visit.
Not every beach is designated
If a beach has no classification, that does not by itself mean the water is poor. It may not be an officially designated bathing water, or the current dataset may not include a matching record.
Check current notices too
Recent rainfall, pollution incidents and local warnings can change the picture. Check official notices and signage alongside the annual classification.
