Understanding UK tide times before a beach visit

Why tide state matters for available beach space, access and coastal safety.

Published 17 July 2026 · Updated 17 July 2026

Tides change the usable beach

A broad beach at low tide can become much smaller at high tide. Coves and access routes can be affected earlier than expected, especially where cliffs or headlands limit escape routes.

Use an appropriate official forecast

Tide times vary by location and are predictions. For time-critical activity, use an official source and understand how the nearest prediction point relates to the beach.

Leave a margin

Do not plan to the minute. Weather, swell and local geography can alter conditions, so give yourself time to return safely.
